William "Willie" F. Davis (1863-1902) was the first professional and clubmaker in North America when he was hired by Royal Montreal as a teenager. His employment at Royal Montreal would be short lived, however, as he was fired within a year. It seemed Davis excelled as a clubmaker, but the membership was not happy with his greenskeeping abilities. His employers were either wrong, as Willie Davis greatly improved, as a decade later he designed Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York, - one of the world's greatest courses. He later had a hand at designing Newport Country Club. Shinnecock and Newport were 2 of the 5 founding clubs of the USGA.
This is a rare smooth face putter produced by Willie Davis, and stamped "W.F. Davis" on the head.
