Though dimpled golf balls have been ubiquitous for decades, it all started with this ball - the F-PW-F "Lunar Surface Dimple" golf ball. Also called the honeycomb dimple, the patent for this pattern of "isolated indentations" was granted to P.G. Fernie on October 25, 1897. [The Story of the Golf Ball by Kevin McGimpsey (2003), p. 188]. The modern "round dimple" pattern was patented nearly 8 years later in 1905. The ball has a personal stamp "W" inside a circle. We can only surmise this was a players identification mark, but are not sure.
This important golf ball is in high grade condition.
